Marmion Athletic Department under new leadership
● By Katelyn Nelson
Marmion Academy's Athletic Department will be under new leadership next school year as Joe Chivari returns to a full-time teaching position after 15 years as the school's Athletic Director. Andrew Damato, currently the assistant AD and 2001 graduate of the Academy, begins his career as the Athletic Director this July. Damato joined Marmion's staff in 2012 as Director of Student Affairs and has also worked as assistant Athletic Director the last two years. One of Damato's first tasks as AD will be leading the search for a new head baseball coach. Applicants interested in the head baseball coaching position can fill out the online application.
At the end of the current season Coach David Rakow announced that he accepted the position as the Director of the Academic Center at Marmion and plans to focus on building that program. Rakow has coached Cadets baseball since 2006.
Marmion also announced that Donald Reynolds has been named the head wrestling coach. Since Reynolds has been coaching at Marmion, the wrestling team has been named IHSA Regional and Sectional Champions, and have repeatedly made it to the IHSA State Meet (2nd place in 2013, 3rd place in 2014 and State qualifier in 2015). In 2014, Reynolds was named the IHSA Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year. Under the direction of Cumbee and Reynolds, 20 Marmion wrestlers have been IHSA State Qualifiers, 15 wrestlers have been named All-State, and 5 wrestlers have been awarded State Champions. Marmion.org
